2018 Bahrain Ironman
Date: December 8, 2018
Location: Manama, Bahrain
On August 4th, 2017, LCpl Cody Haley, was killed in a training accident on Camp Pendleton. At the time, Cody was serving as an 0341 (mortarman) in my company. Cody was a remarkable young man who is dearly missed by all who knew and served alongside him. As part of a promise I made to his family to always honor his life and service, I will be running the Bahrain Ironman on December 8th, 2018 in his memory.
In the days following the accident, I was faced with the issue of unit funding shortages for transportation to Cody’s funeral in Iowa. Of the 55 individuals from California who planned on attending the services, about 45 of them would have had to come out-of-pocket for the expenses associated with the trip.
Immediately following Cody’s death, Mrs. Tracy Della Vecchia and the folks at Marine Parents began a fundraiser to support Cody’s family, gathering around $35,000 in just five days. I had been communicating with Mrs. Kim Haley (Cody’s mom and an absolutely phenomenal woman) and let her know about the travel funding issues we faced. Mrs. Haley graciously asked Mrs. Della Vecchia to direct those funds to support travel expenses for Marines that were stationed in California. Mrs. Della Vecchia bent over backwards to book flights and hotel spaces less than a week out, allowing for these 45 Marines to travel cross country for the weekend at almost no cost.
Just as Cody raised his right hand to serve this great Nation, Marine Parents serves to support the families of Marines who made that very same commitment. Marine Parents is a first-class organization and I cannot speak highly enough about the outstanding Americans who volunteer as part of their efforts. They have my complete support and I back them 100%.
I will be running the race as part of Team Marine Parents and would ask if you have the ability and can find it in your heart, to please donate to Marine Parents via the link above.
