Even though I didnít realize it at the time my journey to run in the Marine Corps Marathon began the night before our youngest son left for Parris Island and boot camp on March 22, 2014. I was desperate to let him know how much we supported him as well as maintain a connection to him while he was at boot camp as best I could. I asked him if there was anything I could do for him while he was away and he simply said ďDad get on an exercise program!Ē So I did. Over those thirteen weeks I began an exercise and diet regime like never before. However, the most important aspect was the daily letter writing to my son of my progress as well as other family news. The day we left for Parris Island I had lost 27 pounds. The reaction from my son when we saw each other on family day made it all worthwhile and then some! Since that time I am down a total of nearly forty pounds. When my doctor asked me what happened, his scared straight warnings clearly hadnít been working, I replied-I made a promise to a future Marine which I intend to keep.

After that initial burst of activity and motivation I found myself leveling off. In early spring of 2015 during a workout the totally random thought came to me in the form of a questionóCould I run in the Marine Corps Marathon? I passed it off quickly as my version of a runners high and let it go until a few weeks later another completely random event occurred. On a Sunday morning flight back to Orlando I by chance ended up sitting next to a customer friend of mine who it turned was returning from competing in his forty-second marathon. I shared my story and he asked me what was I waiting for? I gave it more thought and once again let it go until another random run in with a friend who I hadnít seen in forty years occurred. Same deal, shared my story and it turns out this friend has run in seven Marine Corps Marathons and his description of those events light the fire I was looking for. Talk about peer pressure. Phil and Patrick you know who you are, Iím indebted to you both. Thank you.

A few words about Marine Parents. They are an amazing organization and one that was an invaluable resource to my wife and I as well as our other four children. I do not know how we would have survived boot camp and those early days without Marine Parents. We are grateful for to be members and it is a great honor to be running for their team.

Finally, the race is in Washington, D.C.! My hometown, the city where I met my wife, the place of so many dear friends, where all our family still lives, and it is in Arlington National Cemetery where both my parents are buried. As a military kid, and now as a Marine parent, there is no more sacred place. I really didnít have a choice but to try!

Thank you for listening and thank you for your support!
